After a good closet clean out, it’s a great time to evaluate what you have and what you may need. Lots of times your outfits can be based on a few key pieces that you already own. Or if you don’t own them already, they need to be on your wish list.
So I complied a list of my top ten items to have in your closet. Who knows, you may already have them, but if not, I have a few options for you to choose from!
First up, jeans. From a classic straight let, to a distressed cropped, jeans can have a wide array of options to choose from. I think if you always need at least two type of jeans, one classic pair for nicer events or office wear and one fun pair. Whether it’s distressed, cropped or a light wash, you need at least these two pairs to have on rotation.
I’m a big believer in basic tee’s. White, gray, black, v-neck, crew neck, long sleeve or short sleeve: at least two out of three of the colors need to be in your closet. Tee’s are the perfect layering piece under jackets, blazers, or cardigans. I also love them to dress up and dress down with jewelry.
Along with your jeans and tee’s, a good legging. They aren’t just for working out or for stay at home mom’s. A great legging can be used under long cardigans for the fall and winter and can also be a good run around look with longer tee’s and tennis shoes. As a mom with young kiddos, I’d rather be able to run around in leggings than restricted in jeans or a dress. My kids want to play, not sit nicely for a tea party. Although I wish they would some days!
Keys to find the right legging: invest in a good non-see through pair and a high-waisted pair. They will change your life!
Classic button downs are also one of my favorites. Even women with a larger chest have better options to avoid that gap between buttons. But I love the look of a crisp white button down with nice pants or a pencil skirt for work, or rolled up with distressed jeans for a casual look.
You an almost go with any type of button down, but if you want basic, go with white. I also love chambray if you don’t need anything fancy, striped, or gingham.
A good black dress will always be in style. I have a tendency to go toward black when buying dresses. Mainly because it is a classic color, can be flattering, and really, who doesn’t want a classic little black dress. When looking for a dress, find one that you feel comfortable in, but also suits multiple occasions. Can you wear it to work? Wear it out to dinner? Or can you dress it down? If yes, then put it in your closet!
Aside from all of these basic pieces, you’re going to need to accessorize. One of my go to items is my denim jacket. It’s not just for teachers anymore. A good denim jacket is a great item to go over dresses, shorts, with white denim, and I even pair it with my leggings for errands.
While there are a few that can be fun, be sure to grab one that you can wear with a variety of things. It may be fun to grab a cropped or oversized jacket, but be sure to invest in one good jacket first. Don’t go crazy on jackets because you may not end up wearing them.
My last few items include a good flat and a nice high-heel pump. On both, you don’t have to spend a ton of money, but don’t go too cheap on the classics. I have had my nude pair of pumps for a few years and they go with everything. If you’re tempted to get a a trendier shoe, look for deals, especially at Target- they are killing the shoe game at the moment.
When you’re not dressing up, I love a fun sneaker. From jeans to dresses, and of course leggings, my sneakers may outnumber my heels, and I’m okay with it. Step up your sneaker game and be sure you get a pair you truly like.
Finally on my top ten list, a good bag. Whether you want to have a small cross body, a large tote, or a trendy backpack, one time in your life save your pennies and invest in a good bag. If you don’t want to spend your money on that, there are many options that don’t break the bank but are great to carry around. If you’re going to make an investment, be sure to choose a color you can carry with multiple outfits. Black is always a safe choice, but cognac is a great neutral that you can wear with navy, black, gray, etc. Want to go have fun with a bag? Choose a fun color for a cross body. They can be relatively inexpensive and add a pop to your outfit.
This is a big list, but once you start with the basic ten, you’re on your way to building a closet capsule for yourself. If you’re looking to start building out your basics, start with this list, it may help you along the way!
